NEW 25 MPH SPEED LIMIT ON 2 ROADS IN ROUND HILL

The Board of Selectmen’s office voted on November 14 to establish a 25 MPH speed limit on 3 streets in Greenwich: one downtown on Woodland Drive and two in Round Hill on Will Merry Lane and Spring House Road.  With the support of the local Department of Public Works (DPW) and anticipated approval of the State Department of Transportation, the 25 MPH Speed Limit signs will be officially installed soon.

Will Merry Lane and Spring House combine for a three quarter mile stretch between Round Hill Road and Old Mill Road near Lake Avenue just south of the Merritt Parkway.  According to local papers, the DPW estimates there are around 400 vehicles on the combined road each day, particularly when the Merritt is jammed up and traffic apps on phones route cars onto local roads to save time.  Ines Kingsley, a Round Hill Association (RHA) Board Member and long time resident of Will Merry Lane, joined with other concerned neighbors to get the speed limits approved.

There are many roads in Greenwich which do not have any posted speed limits and hence do not allow town police to enforce excessive speed.  In order to get a speed limit imposed, local residents have to make a case to the Town of Greenwich, and DPW has to do an individual assessment of the traffic issues.  The residents of Will Merry Lane and Spring House were successful in doing that.

The RHA is concerned about traffic and speed on local roads not built to accommodate today’s volume.  In the last year, the RHA  has taken an active role in addressing the increasing amount of traffic and rate of speed on some of the area’s roads and streets which are endangering  the safety of our residents.  The RHA undertook a traffic study of Porchuck Road and presented it to the Board of Selectmen as an example of the safety concerns.  It was well received and is leading to further discussions and improvements.
