Volunteer Firefighters Teach Fire Safety

Do you feel completely safe controlling the fires you start? Did you ever have a mishap with fire? Recently, our neighbors, the Round Hill Volunteer Fire Company, hosted their annual open house, featuring demonstrations on the right way to put out a fire. Chief Rick Strain and his daughter Sharon, also a firefighter with RHVFC, showed the correct way to use a fire extinguisher. Then, using a controlled burn in a small grill, father and daughter invited children, who were properly outfitted in regulation fire jackets and hats, to take turns holding the extinguisher and putting out a blaze.

Other attractions included a bouncy castle, rides on the fire truck, and a chance to check out the firehouse itself in the company of firefighters. Parents proudly photographed their children enjoying the special treat of donning firefighter’s gear and having a go. Chicken Joe’s and The Dough Girls food trucks kept the audience from starvation. Neighbors chatted happily while local children leapt about in the castle or demonstrated their newly acquired skill of putting out a fire.
