On August 5, 2025, in the late afternoon, a black bear (not a cub) was seen and photographed several times in the back yards of several smaller properties on the south side Old Mill Road on the east side of Round Hill Road near the Round Hill Store/Service Station. Last reported it was seen crossing Round Hill Road by the Greenwich Land Trust property.
This is not the first time a bear has been seen in this part of backcountry. A similar occurrence was reported and photographed a few years ago. But there is no official count or record of past number of these sightings. So it is just another reminder that wild animals do exist among us. And all of us with small pets and children must be aware that encounters, while rare, could happen. To date there have not been any human incidents reported. Bears have joined coyotes, deer, turkeys, opossums, skunks. raccoons, and bobcats in our area. This means bird feeders, gardens, and trash cans can be possible attractions for some of these bigger animals looking for sources of food.
